We often get calls about people who misplaced or lost their traffic or tickets and are in a panic because they don’t know if they missed there court date.  It’s not always easy to track down your traffic ticket or which court your case is going to be heard.  Below is some information that will help if you lost your New York traffic ticket.

Traffic tickets in New York can be broken down in two categories, those handled by the Traffic Violations Bureau and every other traffic ticket that will be handled by a city, town or village court.    If you lost your traffic ticket you can start getting on track by finding where exactly you got your traffic ticket.

If your ticket is being heard by the Traffic Violations Bureau, you can request a duplicate copy of the traffic ticket through the TVB’s website.

Traffic Violations Bureau Locations

  • New York City (Staten Island, Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens)
  • Babylon
  • Brookhaven
  • Huntington
  • Islip
  • Smithtown

If your ticket is a not a Traffic Violations Bureau matter you can contact the local court in the town in which you were issued your ticket.  This link will help you locate the courts that are in the vicinity of where you got your traffic ticket.  If you can’t remember where exactly you received your ticket and the court information above did not help your best option is to contact New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles and have a representative assist you.

What Are My Options To Take Care Of My Traffic Ticket?

It’s always best to take care of your traffic ticket sooner rather than later.  You should as the very least contact an attorney about your options and whether you should fight your ticket.  In New York you generally have 3 options in non-TVB courts.

1)      Plead guilty and pay the fine: This option is not recommended.  When you just want to get it over with, you’re automatically admitting guilt.  This means that you are fully accepting the charges, which will be a part of your driving record, accept any points and you which in turn can have a negative impact on your insurance rates.  Also you are giving up your rights to a trial and possibly have the charges completely dismissed.   You do not need an attorney to just give up and plead guilty.

2)      Plead guilty to a lesser charge: This option you will try to get the charges reduced and accept a plea.  You should have an attorney on your side to negotiate the best outcome when plea bargaining. Note that in New York, cases heard by New York’s Traffic Violations Bureau will not entertain plea bargains so this option will not be available to you.

3)      Plead not guilty: Take the matter to trial and try and beat the ticket.  If you plan on taking a matter to trial you should have an attorney to assist you.
