Police to Crackdown on Speeders During ‘Speed Week’

There are plenty of great reasons to watch one’s speed on the road, but here’s one more: State and local law enforcement will be cracking down on speeding during New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) Speed Awareness Week. The additional enforcement will run from Wednesday, August 1 through Tuesday, August 7. Funding for the Speed Week initiative is provided through a grant from the GTSC.

As with many enforcement campaigns, during “Speed Week” State Troopers and local police will use both marked and unmarked vehicles as part of the operation. In addition to speeding, officers will also be watching for other traffic violations, including texting or cell phone violations, impaired driving, seat belt violations, and violations of NY’s Move Over law.

This is not the first “Speed Week” campaign for 2018. Police engaged in a speed enforcement initiative this past June. During the August 2017 Speed Week campaign, State Police issued more than 19,000 traffic tickets. This included more than 7,900 for speeding, and over 580 for cell phone violations and texting while driving. This is a small portion of the 692,202 speeding tickets issued in NYS that year.

There were more than 29,000 speed-related accidents in New York State in 2017. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 3 to 33. Men receive approximately two-thirds of all traffic tickets in New York most years.

Speeding tickets in NY cost between $150 and $600 and can result in at least three points on one’s license. Drivers who are convicted of three or more speeding tickets in 18 months in New York can lose their license—even if they are not licensed to drive in NY. A typical speeding ticket can also increase auto insurance premiums by as much as 30%.
