New Yorkers need to be extra diligent when driving near sanitation trucks. As of Nov 1, 2016, the state’s move over law has been expanded to include recycling and garbage trucks. The update specifies that drivers must provide sanitation workers with a buffer of about 50 feet.
The move over law already applies to law enforcement vehicles, tow trucks, HELP trucks, roadway construction crews, roadway maintenance crews, firefighters, and ambulance workers. Drivers are required to slow down and change lanes when passing these vehicles, if they can safely do so.
Violating New York’s move over law carries a fine of up to $275 plus a driver responsibility assessment and three points on your license. In addition, drivers who are pulled over for move over violations are often ticketed for other offenses, such as failure to yield right of way, reckless driving, unsafe lane change, and speeding. Insurance premiums can also skyrocket after a move over citation.
