lncreased Speeding Enforcement in Effect Through August 7

The New York State Police are cracking down on speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors during a special weeklong traffic enforcement initiative. Troopers are also actively patrolling highway work zones and will target drivers who violate New York’s “Move Over” Law.

Starting, Thursday, August 1, through Wednesday, August 7, the New York State Police will partner with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to conduct “Speed Awareness Week.” According to data from the DMV, unsafe speeds were the fourth-most common factor in accidents in New York in 2018; more than 35,000 crashes in the state involved speeding. Unsafe speed is also the No. 1 factor in fatal accidents.

The campaign coincides with the NASCAR racing event at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Troopers will be using both marked and unmarked State Police vehicles. 

Speeding by all vehicle types, as well as other traffic violations, will be heavily enforced throughout the week in addition to normal year-round enforcement. Troopers will also be watching for other traffic violations, including texting or cell phone violations, impaired driving, unbuckled drivers and passengers, and noncompliance with New York’s Move Over law. During the August 2018 Speed Awareness Week campaign, State Troopers issued 27,584 total tickets, including 14,028 for speeding, or 21% of all speeding tickets issued statewide that month. State Police also wrote 682 tickets for cell phone use/texting, and 437 for violations of the Move Over law.

Fines for speeding in New York can cost between $150 and $600, but it’s not uncommon for them to run much higher. The minimum fine for speeding in a work zone is double that of other speeding tickets. Drivers can also expect between 3 and 11 points on their license should they pay the fine. Too many points can result in a driver being charged a Driver Responsibility Assessment (DRA) fee or having his/her license suspended.
