NYS Speed Enforcement Initiative Begins Thursday 6/11/20

Speeders and aggressive drivers must watch out! State and local law enforcement will be cracking down on unsafe driving during a weeklong traffic enforcement initiative. This year’s “Speed Week” begins Thursday, June 11, 2020 and runs through Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Troopers and other police will also be carefully watching highway work zones and target those who violate New York’s Move Over Law.

Speeding is one of the most common factors in New York State traffic accidents. According to preliminary data from the DMV, 229 people were killed and 10,416 were injured in New York State in speed-related crashes last year. It was the most common contributing factor in fatal accidents and the sixth-most common factor in accidents overall. See more traffic ticket data here.

During the June 2019 Speed Week campaign, State Troopers issued 24,770 total tickets, including 13,016 for speeding, 571 for cell phone and texting violations, and 416 for violations of the Move Over law. This comprises 22% of all speeding tickets given out in June last year.

Law enforcement will increase the use of both marked and unmarked police vehicles to watch for speeding and other traffic violations. The NYPD issues the most speeding tickets by volume in New York State most years, but drivers outside of the city—especially Upstate—should be more mindful of State Troopers, which typically issue the lion’s share of speeding tickets in counties north of Westchester.
