If you received a traffic citation in New York over this year’s Super Bowl weekend, you are not alone. As part of the STOP-DWI enforcement initiative, over 4,500 tickets were issued by NYSP. State troopers also responded to over 150 car accidents. 29 people were injured, though thankfully there were no fatalities.
During the campaign, New York State Police set up sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols to identify and arrest impaired motorists. 92 drivers were arrested for DWI violations. For other violations, such as speeding and distracted driving, ticket breakdowns were as follows:
While this year’s crackdown spanned the whole weekend, last year’s STOP-DWI enforcement was just for the day of the game. As such, state troopers brought in significantly less tickets last year, with just 1,305 citations and nine arrests for DWI offenses.
